Experts assess damage to black box after South Korean plane crash - 1

South Korean experts will check the extent of damage to the black box found on a Jeju Air plane after the December 29 crash. “The black boxes were transported to Gimpo Airport today. Experts will check the level of damage and the possibility of data recovery“, said Joo Jeong-wan, director of the Civil Aviation Department at the South Korean Ministry of Transport.

It was previously reported that the recorder of "one of the two black boxes" was damaged at the time of its discovery. The second device, the one for recording sound in the cockpit, is undamaged.

The damage to the recorder will increase the time needed to decipher the black boxes. Deciphering the flight data recorder will take about a month, South Korean experts believe. If both devices were not damaged, the decryption would have taken about a week.

If South Korean specialists have difficulty deciphering the black boxes, the black boxes can be transferred to their American colleagues at the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB).
