Germany to tighten requirements for immigrants - 1

The conservative Christian Social Union (CSU), which is the dominant political force in the German state of Bavaria, is proposing that migrants' right to reside be tied to proof that they have sufficient income, DPA reported.

In addition, the CSU is calling for the deportation of migrants who have repeatedly committed offenses and crimes, BTA specifies.

These proposals are set out in a document prepared for a meeting of CSU deputies in the Bundestag next week.

The CSU and its sister party, the Christian Democratic Union, form the largest opposition bloc in the lower house of the German parliament and are favorites for first place in the early parliamentary elections in Germany, which will be held on February 23.

Although many of the CSU proposals are in line with the joint election program of the CDU and CSU, the CSU is taking a noticeably tougher stance on some issues.

The CSU document, to which the DPA has gained access, states that people who apply for a residence permit must be able to support themselves through employment and not rely on social benefits.

The document emphasizes that criminals and those who are perceived as a security threat should be deported.

"Anyone who commits a crime or repeatedly breaks the law must leave our country," the document says.

The CSU is also calling for stricter border controls.
