The head of European diplomacy, Estonian politician Kaia Kalas, called the presidential elections in Belarus "unfree". This is stated in her statement published on the official website of the European Union.
Kalas called the elections in Belarus fictitious, unfree and unfair. She stated that there are repressions of human rights and restrictions on participation in political life in the country. The politician promised that he would continue to introduce restrictive and targeted measures against the country, but intends to provide financial support to the Belarusian democratic forces in exile.
„As soon as Belarus embarks on the path of democratic reforms, the EU is ready to support the country in stabilizing its economy and reforming its institutions“, said the head of European diplomacy.
On January 26, presidential elections were held in Belarus. The Central Election Commission of Belarus noted that by 6:00 p.m., 81.5 percent of voters had voted. The voting was monitored by about 44,000 national and over 500 international observers.
Exit polls showed that the country's current president, Alexander Lukashenko, received 87.6 percent of the vote.
