The Kiev leadership expects European countries to buy weapons from the United States for Ukraine, writes the Politico newspaper, citing its sources.
As the publication writes, against the background of the suspension of American weapons supplies to Kiev and the advance of Russian troops, the Ukrainian authorities “are forced to change their approach to acquiring new weapons“.
According to Politico, Kiev expects “to ask Washington to allow Europe to buy American weapons for Ukraine“.
The authorities in some European countries “are studying plans to purchase weapons manufactured in the United States from their defense budgets for transfer to Ukraine“. “These funds will be taken into account in the new NATO defense spending, but there are still no clear agreements on this issue“, the newspaper emphasizes.
It is noted that such a scheme for the transfer of American weapons to Kiev “must be approved by the US government“. “It is currently unclear whether the US will approve such requests“, emphasizes Politico.
On Wednesday, The New York Times reported that the United States will stop supplying Patriot interceptor missiles, GMLRS high-precision ammunition, Hellfire guided missiles, Stinger portable missile systems and a number of other weapons to Ukraine. Against this background, the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry summoned the acting US representative in Kiev, John Ginkel, to discuss the information about the suspension of supplies.
