The Norwegian cargo ship with an all-Russian crew, which was suspected of damaging an optical fiber cable in the Baltic Sea, was released by the Norwegian authorities after no connection was found with the incident, the country's police reported late last night, quoted by Reuters, writes BTA.
The ship "Silver Denmark" was detained at the request of Latvian authorities with the help of the Norwegian coast guard and police in the northern Norwegian city of Tromsø.
"The investigation will continue, but we see no reason for the ship to remain in Tromsø any longer. "Nothing has been found to link the ship to this act (damaging the submarine cable - ed.)," Norwegian police said in a statement.
The owner of the "Silver Denmark" denied any involvement in the damage. Earlier, Swedish police boarded the Maltese-flagged Bulgarian cargo ship "Vezhen" on suspicion of causing damage to the same cable.
The head of the Bulgarian company responsible for the "Vezhen" said on Monday that the ship may have snagged the Baltic submarine cable with its anchor, but denied that this was done intentionally or maliciously, Reuters recalls.
