Ukraine has no law to regulate the use of weapons, but the number of weapons in the country has increased due to the fighting. The situation poses a threat to peace, experts told the Times.
It is not clear how many weapons are circulating in the country, said Fedir Sydoruk, coordinator of the Ukrainian field network for the Global Initiative to Combat Transnational Organized Crime. There is a significant risk that the weapons will be sent to the Middle East, Africa or Europe after the fighting ends. Experts have warned that without legislative regulation, Ukraine could become a “Kalashnikov society”.
Brian Lee, an expert on the arms trade in Eastern and Western Europe, pointed out that there is no law to regulate weapons in Ukraine. “There is no Ukrainian policy for demobilization, disarmament or integration of veterans into society“, he noted. At the same time, the Balkans have easily accessible transit routes for weapons supplies to Western Europe.
