In the age of electrification, the diesel engine still has something to say in terms of efficiency. This was proven by the 2025 European Rally Champion Miko Marczyk, who set an impressive record for fuel economy behind the wheel of the Škoda Superb TDI. The Polish racer managed to cover an astonishing 2,831 km without refueling, using only one tank of fuel.
The journey started in the Polish city of Lodz and passed through Germany, France, Belgium and the Netherlands. For the challenge, Marczyk chose the Škoda Superb TDI model, equipped with a 2.0-liter turbodiesel unit with a power of 150 horsepower and an automatic DSG gearbox. The car was in the Sportline version with lowered suspension and low rolling resistance tires.
Numbers that amaze
The Skoda Superb's 68-liter tank proved to be sufficient for the 2,831 km distance, which means that the average fuel consumption during the rally was only 2.61 liters per 100 km. For comparison, the officially announced consumption for the model in the catalog is 4.8 liters per 100 km.
To achieve this result, Miko Marcik drove extremely carefully, maintaining an average speed of 80 km/h. It is noteworthy that in certain sections of the route in France, where he used the power of the headwind, the consumption dropped to a record low of 2.2 liters per 100 km.
Tips for economical driving from the Champion
Marcic's ambitions do not stop there - he plans to overcome the psychological barrier of 3000 km in the future with a Škoda Superb. Meanwhile, he also shared his main recommendations for all drivers who want to reduce fuel consumption:
Maintaining optimal tire pressure.
Driving in a state of complete rest.
Anticipating traffic to minimize stops.
Smooth acceleration and using eco mode where available.
Taking into account winds while driving.
Miko Marcik's achievement is a demonstration that with proper driving technique and optimized diesel technology, modern cars can achieve exceptional efficiency, far exceeding official data.
