China's answer to the Golf: Leapmotor A05 targets the heart of the European compact class

With budget LFP batteries and a classic silhouette, the new hatchback from the Celestial Empire promises to break the price barriers to electromobility

While European manufacturers are still figuring out how to make electric cars affordable for the masses, the Chinese expansion is adding another blade to its arsenal. The first official shots of the Leapmotor A05, leaked directly from the database of the Chinese Ministry of Industry (MIIT), reveal an ambitious player that is ready to enter into a direct duel with legends such as the Volkswagen Golf and its electric cousin ID.3.

The A05 marks an important strategic shift for the brand. Until now, Leapmotor's portfolio was dominated by massive SUV models and crossovers, but the new model relies on the classic formula of the compact five-door hatchback. With a length of 4.20 meters and a wheelbase of 2.60 meters, the car is slightly more compact than the ID.3, making it ideal for navigating the narrow city streets of the Old Continent.

Leapmotor's technological approach is pragmatic and focused on the final price

Instead of expensive and complex batteries, the A05 will use lithium iron phosphate (LFP). This technology is known for its durability and lower production cost, which is a key factor in achieving a competitive price. Buyers will be able to choose between two powertrain options – with 95 hp or 122 hp, powering the front wheels.

While the interior is still kept secret, the positioning of the model gives a clear idea of the financial parameters. The A05 is expected to fill the gap between the small city T03 and the larger SUV B10. This means that the starting price will likely be in the attractive range of 22,000 to 25,000 euros – a territory that is currently almost empty of quality electric offers.

With the Leapmotor A05 entering the European market, competition for “people” electric cars promises to become hotter than ever. The Chinese “Golf“ not only does it look good on paper, but it also has the potential to transform electric driving from a luxury into an everyday reality for many.
