Net gas production (the net difference between the volume of production and injection) from underground storage facilities (UGS) in Europe since the start of the heating season has exceeded 54 billion cubic meters, which is 99% of the volumes pumped in the summer, according to calculations made using data from Gas Infrastructure Europe (GIE).
The withdrawals from the underground gas storage on February 14 amounted to about 493 million cubic meters. The total number of withdrawals from the storage since the beginning of the month is only the seventh maximum for February. The total volume of fuel in the underground gas storage is now about 37.5 billion cubic meters.
Temperatures in Europe this week are expected to be noticeably lower compared to the previous seven-day period. Warming will return to the region only at the weekend.
The share of wind generation in electricity generation in the EU averaged 19% in January and 20% in February. The average purchase price of gas in Europe in February was 407 dollars per 1000 cubic meters compared to 415 USD in January.
The last season of gas withdrawal from European underground storages ended on March 28, 2025, when 33.57% of the reserves remained in them. Currently, UGS facilities in Europe are 33.97% full (16.2 percentage points lower than the average for this date over the past five years) compared to 45.2% a year earlier. Since the start of the heating season on October 13, EU countries have withdrawn about 59.5 billion cubic meters from storage. Net extraction exceeded 54 billion cubic meters, or 99% of the volumes pumped during the summer. At the same time, the total gas withdrawal from underground gas storage facilities on the 125th day since reaching their maximum fill was 4% higher than the average for this day over the previous five years.
A lower percentage of storage capacity as of mid-February was observed only in 2022 (32.7%). Then the heating season ended in March, when about 25-26% of the reserves remained in the underground gas storage. The absolute minimum of gas in European storages was registered in March 2018 - 17.7%.
