This summer the US will launch a pilot program to test „flying cars“, which will eventually be used to transport people and goods around the city. Wired magazine reported this, citing the US Department of Transportation.

The new aircraft will be used, among other things, as urban „air taxis“, for transporting goods and for emergency services. The program will be launched in 26 states. The vehicles will operate like airplanes, but will require less space for takeoff and landing, making them similar to helicopters.

The companies involved in the program claim that the new vehicles will produce less noise and emissions than airplanes and helicopters. Vehicles will be able to take off and land closer to where people live and work. Some companies are also developing unmanned versions of "flying cars." "This is not science fiction. This is happening in reality," the head of one of the participating companies told the magazine. The Department of Transportation added that the initiative was made possible by an executive order signed by US President Donald Trump in June 2025, aimed at creating a program to test flying cars and increasing the production of unmanned aerial vehicles. The first test flight of a flying car was already carried out in Japan at the end of last month. The vehicle is equipped with batteries and 12 rotor blades similar to those used in quadcopters. It can carry three people and cover a range of 15 to 40 km.
