During searches in the office and home of the doctors detained in Plovdiv for distributing methadone, 1 million leva were found. This became clear today during the hearing of their case by the Plovdiv District Court. The defense of Fanya and Kostadin Tanevi announced that the amount came from the doctors’ savings, BTA reported.
The two were detained on June 2 during a check in a psychiatric office for a methadone program for the treatment of drug addicts.
The accusation is that the two – 54-year-old Fanya Taneva and 56-year-old Kostadin Tanev distributed the high-risk narcotic substance.
The court today determined for them the most severe measure of “detention in custody“.
These crimes are serious and intentional and they are punishable by imprisonment, which is the first prerequisite for imposing a measure of detention in custody, said Judge Ekaterina Roglekova.
She added that a short period of time has passed since the beginning of the investigation, but despite this, sufficient evidence has been collected for the court to make a reasonable assumption about the crime committed by the accused.
So far, witnesses have been questioned and material evidence has been seized. Another defendant has been brought into the case, who has given detailed explanations.
According to witnesses, during the search and seizure, a quantity of methadone was found that significantly exceeded the quantity allowed to be stored in that place.
Six people, participants in the methadone program in the defendants' practice, were questioned. They described in detail how they were supplied with methadone and said that they were provided with a smaller quantity than was prescribed to them.
The decision of the District Court - Plovdiv is subject to appeal or protest before the Court of Appeal.
