The US Air Force has announced a tender for the construction of private data centers (DCs) on unused land at five air bases to help accelerate the implementation of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies in the country, Defense News reported.
„AI is changing the modern world. These data centers are essential to maintaining the US leadership in innovation“, the magazine quotes Robert Moriarty, deputy assistant secretary of the Air Force for infrastructure.
The publication notes that the Air Force is proposing to use land at air force bases in Tennessee, Arizona, California, New Jersey and Georgia, totaling approximately 1,250 hectares. To receive Air Force approval, future data centers must have a capacity of more than 100 MW and be valued at a minimum of $500 million. The land will be leased for 50 years, with the contract only extended if the government deems the project important for defense and national interests.
When asked whether the centers will be used for military purposes, an Air Force representative called the project “an opportunity for third-party companies“.
The Air Force will accept bids for the construction until November 14 and will announce the results of the tender in January next year.
