A case has been opened in Austria against a climber who left his girlfriend on the summit without helping her get down.
The tragedy took place on January 19 last year, but the court is only now starting to hear the case, the BBC reports.
The two began climbing the Grossglockner (3,798 m) peak, but shortly before the summit the conditions became very difficult, and the woman was extremely exhausted. Then the man, instead of helping her get down, left her and went off alone. The woman later died of frostbite.
According to prosecutors, the man, who was also the more experienced climber, should have either stopped the climb in time or called for help.
The climber denies any wrongdoing and insists that what happened to his girlfriend was a tragic accident.
