June 26: International Day Against Drugs

The date was adopted by the UN General Assembly in 1987

The date June 26 was adopted by the UN in 1987 on this day people from all over the world express their sympathy and active position in the fight against drug addiction.

In recent years, an epidemic of use and abuse of a wide range of narcotic substances has been observed, which covers a significant part of the young generation of Bulgaria. The use of cigarettes, paradise gas, alcohol, medications, drugs leads to immediate physical and mental problems. Long-term use leads to severe and debilitating insomnia, easy excitability, high blood pressure and arrhythmias. Much more severely, however, is the mental health of users. Restlessness, anxiety, aggressiveness, and above all - addiction appear. Unfortunately, the media's interest is more on the criminal aspects of the phenomenon, and the real problems related to providing treatment to addicts, rather remain in the background.

Addictions are part of the civilization, culture and myths of our time. They are present in our lives, regardless of whether we accept the existence and acuteness of the problem and give it the necessary attention. They penetrate everywhere, and no one, regardless of social status, education, material satisfaction or poverty, is immune from encountering them. The use of psychoactive substances leading to addiction is a significant health and social problem for the citizens of Bulgaria and Europe. It is a threat to the security and health of European society.

The European Drug Report once again reveals that Europe faces an increasingly complex problem with the use of stimulants, new psychoactive substances, the abuse of alcohol, paradisiacal drugs, and the problematic use of cannabis. In addition, the report reminds us that some of the problems inherited from the past are still relevant, although the challenges that these problems currently pose for policy and practice are changing, writes srzi.bg.
