Medvedev shockingly crashed out at the start of Wimbledon

The Russian lost to French tennis player Benjamin Bonzi 6:7(2), 6:3, 6:7(3), 2:6 in just over three hours of play

Ninth-seeded Daniil Medvedev surprisingly crashed out in the first round of the "Wimbledon" Grand Slam tournament, which started today, BTA reported.

The Russian, who reached the semifinals last year, broke his rackets after suffering a loss to French tennis player Benjamin Bonzi 6:7(2), 6:3, 6:7(3), 2:6 in just over three hours of play.

Bonzi, 64th in the world rankings, has never advanced beyond the third round of a Grand Slam tournament.

"Daniel is great player. I knew I was in for a tough match, but sometimes it's good to play a tough match in the first round. I had nothing to lose. It was a good time to play my best match. I knew I could do something big today and today was my day," said Bonzi.

The 24th seeded Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas was also eliminated in the first round, losing to Frenchman Valentin Royer. Tsitsipas lost the first two sets 3-6, 2-6 and retired due to injury.

American Frances Tiafoe qualified for the second round after defeating Dane Elmer Moller 6-3, 6-4, 6-2.

23rd seeded Czech Jiri Lehetska also advances, beating Bolivian Hugo Delien 4-6, 6-2, 6-2, 7-6(0).

British qualifier Oliver Tarvet enjoyed a dream Wimbledon main draw debut with a 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 victory over Swiss Leandro Ridi.

Second-round losers are guaranteed £99,000 in prize money, but as Tarvet is still a student at the University of St. Diego, and due to his amateur status, the 719th ranked player in the world will only be entitled to $10,000 plus any expenses he incurred.

Tarvett was the only British player to survive the qualifying tournament, joining 22 other local players in the singles draw, 14 of whom were wildcards.

In the second round, the 21-year-old Tarvett could face defending champion Carlos Alcaraz of Spain.
