The cabin filter of the car: Which one to choose and when to change it?

This is the invisible hero of your health in the car

When it comes to car maintenance, most drivers are focused on changing the air, fuel and oil filters. However, one extremely important component is often overlooked - the cabin filter. It is the only one that directly protects our health by purifying the air we breathe in the car.

The evolution of cabin filters

More than three decades ago, in the early 1990s, cabin filters were a luxury available only to flagships like the Mercedes-Benz 140. Today, they are standard equipment in almost every car, which emphasizes their importance. However, with the variety of types, brands, and prices, choosing the right filter can be confusing.

What is a cabin air filter?
Simply put, a cabin air filter is a barrier built into a car's air conditioning system. Its main function is to prevent contaminants such as dust, dirt, pollen, unpleasant odors, and even bacteria from entering the cabin through the ventilation ducts.

Location and types of filters

In most cars, the cabin filter is located behind the glove compartment or under the dashboard. Access to it can also be from below, in the driver's or passenger's footwell. Visually, all filters look similar - a rectangular cartridge made of synthetic material, folded like an accordion. The difference lies in the number of layers and their content.

The main types of filters are:

Barrier filters: The simplest and most affordable option, which serves for rough air purification from dust, leaves and insects.

Carbon filters: More expensive, but also more effective. They contain activated carbon, which captures toxic gases, alcohol vapors and unpleasant odors. Visually distinguished by their black color.

Carbon-polyphenol filters: A type of carbon filter enriched with polyphenols that neutralize pollen. An ideal choice for people suffering from allergies.

Electret filters: An additional layer with a static charge that captures smoke particles and fungal spores.

Combined filters: Combine several filter types into one, ensuring maximum air purification.

Which filter to choose?

The choice of filter depends on several factors. While a standard filter is inexpensive, it does not provide adequate protection against gases and odors. On the other hand, the best multi-layer filters are more expensive and are not suitable for all cars. For example, carbon-polyphenol filters are not recommended for cars with weak air conditioning systems.

Despite the variety, all modern filters made of non-woven synthetic material are considered antibacterial, since special treatment prevents the development of mold and microorganisms.

When to change the filter?

Manufacturers recommend changing it at least once a year or every 15,000 kilometers. However, if you notice problems such as:
Frequent fogging of the windows, stale, unpleasant odor from the air vents, reduced air flow into the passenger compartment. A reason for more frequent replacement may also be the presence of allergies or asthma.

The safest way to choose a filter is to use the original part number for your vehicle. Do not skimp on quality by choosing cheap alternatives, as they may be less effective. Trust established brands that guarantee a high degree of filtration and a long product life. A heavier carbon filter usually means a higher carbon content, which makes it more effective. Choosing the right cabin filter is an investment in the health and comfort of everyone in the car.
