Foldable iPhone to be cheaper than expected

Apple finds a way to save money

According to the latest analysis, Apple's first foldable smartphone, tentatively called the iPhone Fold, which is expected to be released in the second half of 2026, may be more affordable than initially predicted. Although it is expected to be the most expensive iPhone in the company's history, its price is likely to be slightly lower than initial estimates, thanks to optimization of production costs for the key component - the hinge.

Respected analyst Ming-Chi Kuo estimates that the price of the hinge during mass production will be approximately $ 70-80. This value is significantly lower than previous market estimates, which put it in the range of $ 100-120 or even more. Kuo emphasizes that this cost reduction was achieved by "optimizing the assembly design", not by compromising on quality or using cheaper materials.

To achieve this, Apple is relying on its key partners. Foxconn, the company's long-time partner, has formed a joint venture with Taiwanese manufacturer Shin Zu Shing to produce the hinges. According to Kuo, Foxconn has a slightly larger stake in this venture and will determine the future direction of development.

The joint venture will take over the production of approximately 65% of all hinges needed, while American manufacturer Amphenol will supply the remaining 35%. There are expectations that another major manufacturer, Luxshare, may join the joint venture in 2027, which would further reduce the cost of hinge production.

Regardless of the savings achieved, the forecasts of Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman and analysts from JPMorgan remain that the starting price of the iPhone Fold will be around $2,000.
