Why the new Mercedes S-Class has heated seat belts

It's not just about comfort

Heated seats and a steering wheel have long been part of the mandatory arsenal of every premium car, but engineers from Stuttgart decided to go even further. In the latest iteration of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, a seemingly extravagant feature debuts - heated seat belts. And although many would describe it as another whim for the rich, the truth is that behind it lies an iron logic related to surviving an accident.

The main problem in winter is not only the cold, but also bulky outerwear. Thick jackets and coats create a dangerous air cushion between the body and the safety belt, which drastically worsens the work of the pretensioners in a collision. In a critical situation, the belt can slip or not distribute the load correctly on the passenger's skeletal structure. This is where the innovation, developed in collaboration with technology giant ZF, comes in: warming up to body temperature in just four minutes, the belt encourages the driver and passengers to take off their heavy jackets as soon as they enter the cabin. The result is a snug fit that guarantees maximum passive protection.

This “warm welcome“ is just the tip of the iceberg in the updated architecture of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class. The engineers have implemented an impressive arsenal of nearly 2,700 new safety-oriented components. The car now has as many as 15 airbags, including specialized pelvic protectors and innovative curtain airbags for the second row of seats. All of this works in sync with the intelligent E-BODY ACTIVE CONTROL AI suspension, which literally “reads” the asphalt in front of it using radar and cameras, preparing the chassis for any bumps or holes even before the wheels have touched them.

Caring for passengers continues through the respiratory tract. The new electrostatically charged filtration system is capable of completely refreshing the air in the cabin every 90 seconds, capturing even the finest harmful particles from city smog. Finally, the adaptive “snow“ lights project warning symbols directly onto the pavement in slippery areas, turning night driving in snowfall from an ordeal into a safe experience. The Mercedes-Benz S-Class proves once again that true luxury is not just in soft leather, but in an invisible network of technologies that take care of you.
