Several thousand people demonstrated in downtown Buenos Aires yesterday to demand justice after the horrific murder this week of three young women - a case with a suspected drug trafficking link, AFP reported.
Relatives of the victims, united behind a banner with the names of the young women “Lara, Brenda, Morena“ and posters with their photos, led the march, reinforced by several radical left organizations, which set off from the “Mayo” square to parliament.
The bodies of Morena Verdi and Brenda del Castillo, two cousins, both 20, and Lara Gutierrez, 15, were found on Wednesday, buried near a house in the southern suburbs of Buenos Aires, five days after they disappeared.
According to the provincial security minister, Javier Alonso, they were tricked into going to a party and tortured before being killed. The scenes were watched live by 45 people on a closed social media account - apparently to educate members of a criminal gang.
“We must protect women, this must never happen again”, an emotional Leonel del Castillo, Brenda's father, told journalists shortly before the demonstration began. He said he “could not recognize“ his daughter's body because of the severe injuries she suffered.
“It was a narcofeminicide!“ “Our lives are not for throwing away!“, “We love living!“ – could be read on posters and banners during the demonstration, which was relatively small compared to the social mobilizations that are often held in Buenos Aires, AFP noted.
The march was called by the influential organization Ni una menos (“Not One Less”), which fights against gender-based violence.
A fifth suspect, accused of providing logistical support by car, was arrested on Friday in Bolivia, near the Argentine border, after two men and two women were detained on Wednesday and placed under temporary arrest. Two other young men, including a 20-year-old Peruvian man suspected of being the ringleader, are being actively sought.
