German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has expressed his support for banning mobile phones in primary schools, DPA reported, BTA reported.

In an interview with public broadcaster ARD, Merz said he agreed with the idea when asked about it.

The Chancellor added, however, that limiting access to social media to the age of 16 would be much more difficult to implement. He said he was sympathetic to countries that have already introduced such rules.

“Children should learn to read, write and count, not play with mobile phones“, said Merz.

A recent survey by the German Ifo Institute found that 85% of German adults are “in favor“ of restricting access to social media for those under 16.

BTA recalls that Bulgaria is also considering introducing a ban on the use of mobile phones in schools.

There are five possible solutions for schools, said Diyan Stamatov – chairman of the Union of Heads of the Public Education System in Bulgaria (SRSNPB), who is also the principal of the capital's 119th Secondary School “Acad. Mihail Arnaudov” at the end of September.
