At least 27 people killed after torrential rains in Mexico VIDEO

Several people missing

Heavy rains have killed at least 27 people in Mexico, with several people missing. The rains triggered landslides, disrupted power supplies in some towns and led to rivers overflowing, Reuters reported, quoted by BTA.

The civil defense in the state of Hidalgo reported 16 deaths and added that at least 1,000 homes and hundreds of schools were affected by the disaster.

The governor of the state of Puebla, Alejandro Armenta, said at least nine people had died in landslides and five were missing. Two more deaths were reported in the state of Veracruz.

"We are doing everything we can to help the population, open roads and restore electricity," wrote Ex-President Claudia Sheinbaum. She shared photos of rescue teams forced to carry emergency supplies, wading knee-deep in water through flooded streets.

The Defense Ministry announced that it had activated more than 5,400 military personnel to assist in monitoring the situation, evacuations and clearing the affected areas.

Meanwhile, storms "Raymond" and "Priscilla" hit the Baja California peninsula and the western Pacific coast of Mexico, bringing heavy rainfall with them.
