Vance on peace in Ukraine: We didn't expect it to be so difficult, the differences between the warring parties are huge

Sanctions have proven not to work, tariffs are a better tool for pressure, Trump's vice president believes

US Vice President J.D. Vance believes that Russia and Ukraine are not yet ready to reach an agreement to resolve the conflict, but that eventually it will be possible.

“Despite all the work that we have done and that we will continue to do, Russia and Ukraine have not reached a point where they are ready to reach an agreement. I think we will eventually get there, but it will take more work, because the positions of the two sides are very different“, he said in an interview with Newsmax.

The vice president added that despite progress in resolving the Ukrainian conflict, it has proven more difficult to resolve than the US administration expected. He also said Washington sees tariffs, rather than sanctions, as a “more effective negotiating tool“. “Sanctions have been used around the world for decades and I don't think they work very well,“ Vance added.

“I think President Trump is confident he can make a deal. I think he will. The only question is how long it will take,“ Vance concluded.
