Colombia accuses US of violating maritime sovereignty and killing fisherman

Alejandro Carranza had no connection to drug trafficking and his daily activity was fishing, President Petro stressed

Colombian President Gustavo Petro accused the US of violating Colombia's maritime sovereignty and killing a fisherman during the deployment of US military forces in the Caribbean Sea, presented as an operation against drug traffickers, Agence France-Presse reported, quoted by BTA.

"US government officials committed a murder and violated the sovereignty of our territorial waters," President Petro said in "Ex" (X).

"The fisherman Alejandro Carranza had no connection to drug trafficking and his daily activity was fishing", he stressed, referring to a Colombian who was killed in September during an attack by US forces on his boat.

In recent weeks, the US Navy has carried out strikes on vessels of suspected drug traffickers in the Caribbean Sea.

The latest such case was announced last night by President Donald Trump, who wrote in "Truth Social" that the US military had destroyed a submarine loaded with a large amount of drugs and sailing to the United States along a well-known drug trafficking route.

"The two surviving terrorists have been returned to their countries - Ecuador and Colombia, for detention and prosecution," Trump added.

Shortly afterwards, President Gustavo Petro announced that Colombian who survived US submarine attack has returned to Colombia.

"We welcomed the Colombian arrested on the drug submarine. We are happy that he is alive and will be tried according to the law," the Colombian head of state said in "Ex".
