After lengthy discussions, the parties in the German government coalition have reached an agreement on how to increase the number of the armed forces in response to the threat from Russia. In the near future, no conscription is planned, nor is there a sharp increase in the ranks of the Bundeswehr, the BBC summarizes, reports News.bg.

Chancellor Friedrich Merz said that after Russia's attack on Ukraine, Germany must strengthen its armed forces to the necessary level, and the government headed by him is striving to make the German army the strongest in Europe.

Berlin is accelerating the process of increasing the number of army personnel and providing additional funding.

However, the restoration of conscription remains a sensitive political issue. The majority of German society continues to view the idea of returning conscription and increasing military power negatively.

The historical context also influences public opinion: many Germans still remember the disastrous consequences of the country's remilitarization, which led to the two world wars in the first half of the 20th century.
