The European Union would benefit from Serbia's accession, but Brussels is deliberately delaying this process while at the same time insisting on the rapid admission of Ukraine, despite the fact that it, in his words, “runs a corruption machine at the highest state level”. This was stated in Belgrade by Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto, quoted by the national MTI agency, BTA reports.
After a meeting with his Serbian counterpart Marko Đurić, Szijjarto called on Serbia to become an EU member as soon as possible, emphasizing that both the country and the Union itself, including Hungary, would benefit from this.
“We have Serbia - a country with potential, growth and development, which would be an asset for the EU, but Brussels does not want to accept it. At the same time, Ukraine, which poses serious risks to the community, is being pushed towards accelerated accession“, said the Hungarian Foreign Minister.
In his words, this policy fundamentally undermines confidence in the European enlargement strategy. “Serbia is a country whose membership would clearly benefit the EU due to its good economic performance, but a number of member states continue to block its progress“, Szijjarto added.
