Poland will buy three submarines from Sweden, as part of a multi-billion dollar deal that is key to strengthening the country's defenses in the Baltic Sea, Reuters reports, News.bg reports.

The investment aims to strengthen Poland's armed forces and respond to the growing threat from Russia after its invasion of Ukraine in 2022. The deal under the "Orca" program is among the most significant so far for the Polish army.

"Sweden offered the best conditions on all criteria, including delivery times and operational capabilities, especially for the Baltic Sea," said Deputy Prime Minister Wladyslaw Kosyniak-Kamysz. He added that the commercial deal could be finalized no later than the second quarter of 2026.

Swedish company Saab, a manufacturer of submarines, fighter jets, surveillance systems and missiles, will supply Poland with the A26 submarines. Poland has also received offers from other countries, including Germany, Italy, France, Spain and South Korea.
