From this week, renting a scooter in Brussels will only be possible by providing a photo of the client and their ID card, local media reported. All private scooters will also receive registration numbers, BTA reports.
The aim of the new rules is to limit the possibility of committing crimes with rented scooters. The changes were recommended by the prosecutor's office in connection with the fight against drug trafficking and frequent traffic accidents with electric vehicles.
The authorities have asked the two companies providing scooter rentals to introduce selfie unlocking technology, similar to banking applications. The two companies have expressed their willingness to discuss and coordinate technical solutions for implementing the system.
