Bernd Lange, head of the European Parliament's International Trade Committee, intends to propose suspending the ratification of the EU-US trade deal until clarifications are received on the trade policy of President Donald Trump's administration, Bloomberg reported.

According to the MEP, at an extraordinary meeting on Monday, he will propose freezing work on approving the agreement, “until a comprehensive legal assessment and clear commitments from the US are received“.

This agreement provides for the imposition of 15% tariffs on European goods sent to the US and was concluded in August 2025.

On February 20, the US Supreme Court ruled against Donald Trump's tariffs, which were imposed under a federal law designed to address national emergencies. The Supreme Court's ruling affects a significant portion of the tariffs imposed by the Trump administration, but not all. Among those targeted are "reciprocal" tariffs imposed on most countries; tariffs on goods from China, Canada, and Mexico justified by the need to combat the smuggling of the synthetic opioid fentanyl into the United States; and "secondary" tariffs against India imposed in response to its purchases of Russian oil.

A day earlier, President Trump, in response to the Supreme Court's ruling, announced an increase in tariffs on U.S. imports to 15%. He added that he made the decision "based on a thorough, detailed, and complete" review of the "utterly un-American" Supreme Court decision.

The U.S. Constitution grants Congress the sole authority to impose import tariffs. However, Trump has repeatedly said he can impose tariffs without legislative approval, citing the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) of 1977. This law allows the president to “regulate” economic transactions, including the importation of foreign products, after declaring a national emergency.
