The death toll from the torrential rains that hit the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais has reached 30. Another 39 people are still missing, CNN Brasil reported.
The torrential rains caused floods and landslides in the state. The worst damage was caused in the cities of Juiz de Fora and Uba. About 440 people were left homeless. Thirteen residents were rescued from the rubble of collapsed buildings. A total of 208 victims have been rescued and are now receiving the necessary medical care.
As previously announced by Brazilian Vice President Geraldo Alcmin, the country's authorities have deployed armed forces, including helicopters and military equipment, to search and provide assistance to the victims. According to the Metr Poles portal, those left homeless will receive an initial financial assistance of 800 Brazilian reais (approximately $155). The funds will be used by local authorities to purchase mattresses, clothing and food.
