Canadian authorities are in talks with their allies in the Middle East about providing military aid, but have not yet received specific requests.
“We have not yet received any requests from allies in the Middle East“, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney told reporters, according to The Globe and Mail. The prime minister added that he and Foreign Minister Anita Anand are currently “holding talks with leaders of the Persian Gulf countries“ on the issue. Carney stressed that any decision on military assistance would be made by the Canadian government, not the Canadian military.
On Friday, it was reported that Canada's Chief of the General Staff, Jenny Carignan, had discussed with military representatives from European countries options for providing military assistance to Gulf states affected by the conflict with Iran. Carney also previously said that Canada does not intend to participate in combat operations, but did not rule out the possibility that this could be possible if requested by allies.
