Millions of people watched the total solar eclipse over North America - from Mexico through the United States to Canada, the Associated Press reported, quoted by BTA.

One after another yesterday, areas were plunged into darkness, stretching from the Mexican city of Mazatlán, on the Pacific coast, through 15 US states to the Canadian Atlantic province of Newfoundland.

The Moon completely hid the Sun for up to 4 minutes and 29 seconds in places, DPA notes.

In the area where the astronomical phenomenon could be observed, 44 million people live, according to the AP. Millions more people came to see the rare phenomenon.

Total solar eclipses can be seen on Earth every 11 to 18 months, but not often in areas where so many people live. The last time this astronomical phenomenon was visible in the United States was in 2017, and the next time the moon will completely block the sun for people living from one coast to the other of the United States will not be until 2045, notes AP.

Otherwise, a year earlier, a total solar eclipse will be visible from three US states.

Enthusiasts will have the opportunity to see the rare phenomenon in 2026 in Spain, according to AFP.
