Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Szykorski said today that US supplies of long-range weapons to Ukraine could be an "inspiration" for Germany to supply Kiev with its "Taurus" cruise missiles, DPA reported, quoted by BTA.
Shikorski made the statement during a joint press conference with German Foreign Minister Analena Berbock in the Polish town of Slubice on the border with Germany. There was a demonstration in honor of the 20th anniversary of Poland's accession to the EU.
The Polish foreign minister has previously called on Germany to deliver Taurus missiles. of Ukraine, but he said that he would not interfere in the internal affairs of a friendly country, DPA points out.
Berbock, in turn, noted that in Germany there is a "intense debate" on the matter. "As happens in democratic countries, we have to make a decision together," said the German foreign minister.
She mentioned her joint initiative with her government colleague Boris Pistorius, the defense minister, to lobby partners to supply more air defense systems to Kiev.
DPA also draws attention to the fact that German Chancellor Olaf Scholz once rejected the option of supplying Kiev with Taurus missiles. because of his fears that in this way his country would be drawn directly into a conflict with Russia.
In recent weeks, the US has delivered ATAKMS (Army Tactical Missile Systems) long-range missile systems to Ukraine.
