The German government remains in opposition of the idea of deploying a defensive shield on NATO territory to protect the skies of Western Ukraine from Russian airstrikes, the government spokesman in Berlin, Steffen Hebestreit, said today, quoted by DPA, writes BTA.
"From our point of view, this would be an intervention, a direct intervention in this conflict. And this is not something we are aiming for, said the government spokesman in Berlin today.
Hebeschreit also mentioned statements by German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius and NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg.
Recently, some countries have invited NATO forces to strengthen Ukraine's air defenses by creating some kind of shield.
Hebeschreit did not comment on the question of whether and in what form Ukraine has guaranteed that it will not attack targets in Russia with the weapons systems provided by Germany.
These regulations are subject to confidentiality and have proven useful, Hebestreit said, noting that under the provisions of international law, an attacked state can defend itself beyond its own borders.
