German Foreign Minister Analena Berbock has sharply criticized the actions of the Belarusian authorities regarding a German citizen sentenced to death there, DPA reported, quoted by BTA.
"It is intolerable to watch the Belarusian regime divorce a German citizen on television," Berbock told journalists in Hamburg.
"Of course, we as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as well as our embassy on the ground, are not only in close contact with the affected person and his relatives, but also provide the German citizen with the best possible consular assistance," he added Berbok.
She noted that throughout Europe the death penalty has been abolished and banned.
"There are clear rules on how to treat foreign citizens, we do our best to help the German citizen in the best possible way," added Berbock.
In video footage broadcast yesterday on state television, the German, sentenced to death, appeals to Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko to show him mercy.
The German government is doing nothing to save me, the man convicted of carrying out terrorist acts in favor of Ukraine tells the footage.
"I admit my guilt, unconditionally," he declared in German, his words being heard fragmentarily under the simultaneous translation.
There are serious questions about the circumstances under which the footage was taken, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Berlin said.
