The German Air Force is participating in joint military exercises in India for the first time, DPA reported, quoted by BTA.

The first phase of the exercise, called "Tarang Shakti,", which also involves the Spanish, French and British air forces, has begun, a Luftwaffe spokesman announced today.

German Air Force spokesman Ingo Gerharz said India is an important partner for Germany and Europe. India's population is 1.4 billion, making it the most populous country in the world.

According to observers, the exercises may be related to China's expansionist policy. Relations between Delhi and Beijing are strained due to border disputes and unresolved economic issues.

Germany is also interested in a multi-billion dollar submarine manufacturing deal in India.

The Indian government is looking for a cooperation partner in the production of conventional submarines in India, including technology exchange. India is currently considering the respective offers of Spain and Germany.
