Monkeypox, whether it is the new or the old strain, is not the new COVID-19 because authorities know how to control its spread, the World Health Organization (WHO) regional director said today for Europe Hans Kluge, quoted by Reuters and BTA.

„We can and must deal with monkeypox together”, Kluge said at a media briefing.

„So shall we choose to implement monkeypox control and elimination systems on a global scale? Or will we enter another cycle of panic and neglect? The way we react now and in the coming years will prove to be a critical test for Europe and the world," he added.

Monkeypox is a viral infection that causes purulent lesions and flu-like symptoms. It is usually mild, but can lead to death, notes Reuters.

The new strain of monkeypox is causing worldwide concern as it appears to spread more easily through routine close contact. Last week, a case of this variant was confirmed in Sweden, which has been linked to a growing epidemic in Africa.

Kluge said the focus on the new strain gives Europe an opportunity to focus on the old strain, which is milder, including through better advice and public health surveillance.

Currently, around 100 new cases of the new strain of monkeypox are being registered in the European region every month, he added.
