Increased migration flows cannot be solved by unilaterally abolishing the Schengen area . This was stated by Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, quoted by "Reuters" and BTA.

Earlier this week, Germany announced plans to impose tighter checks on all its land borders in a bid to tackle illegal migration.

Checks in the wide area of free movement – the European Schengen Area – will begin on September 16 and initially run for six months.

"The answer cannot be to unilaterally abolish Schengen and pass the ball to countries located on the outer borders of Europe," Mitsotakis stressed.

In his words, the decision should include a "fair compromise" between all European countries that will accept the need to protect Europe's external borders.
