After the resignation of the leader of the ruling Social Democrats in Germany, Kevin Kühnert, acting general secretary Matthias Miersch will become the leader of the German Social Democratic Party, DPA reported, quoted by BTA.
GSDP co-chairs Lars Klingbeil and Zaskia Esken proposed that Miersch, who is currently vice-chairman of the party's parliamentary group, take over as general secretary. The Executive Committee of the GSDP unanimously approved the recommendation.
The German Social Democratic Party is the party of Chancellor Olaf Scholz, who governs in coalition with the Greens and the liberal Free Democratic Party.
It is not yet clear whether Miersch will take over the post permanently and whether he will be supported by co-chairman Klingbeil, who was previously general secretary.
Miersch, who is a seasoned left-wing politician from the northern state of Lower Saxony, has been an MP for the center-left Social Democrats since 2005. He is considered a staunch advocate of phasing out fossil fuels and transitioning to renewable energy sources.
