India is considering closing its airspace to Pakistani carriers and banning Pakistani ships from docking at Indian ports, the Economic Times newspaper reported, citing government sources.
As the publication points out, in this case Pakistan would have to reroute planes via China or Sri Lanka to reach destinations in Southeast Asia. State-owned Pakistan International Airlines uses Indian airspace to access several destinations in that part of the world, including Kuala Lumpur and other Malaysian cities, in addition to Singapore and Thailand.
Tensions between the two nuclear-armed countries, which have reached the point of war, have flared after a deadly attack on tourists in Kashmir last week that killed 26 people.
India has accused Pakistan of supporting militants in Kashmir, a region over which both countries claim control and have fought two wars, Reuters notes.
After the attack in Kashmir, India identified two suspects as Pakistani nationals. Islamabad denies any role in the attack and has called for a neutral investigation.
