German Chancellor Friedrich Merz is deeply concerned about the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip and is maintaining an active dialogue with other European countries on the subject. This was announced by the chancellor's spokesman, Stefan Cornelius, quoted by Reuters, reports BTA.
“It has always been essential for the German government to maintain open communication channels with the Israeli government“, Cornelius stressed during a press conference.
Amid the tensions, Germany has announced its support for preserving the Association Agreement between the European Union and Israel. This came a day after the EU announced it would review the agreement in an attempt to put diplomatic pressure on Tel Aviv, Agence France-Presse reported.
While not confirming media reports that Berlin had opposed the review, Foreign Ministry spokesman Christian Wagner said:
“The EU-Israel Association Agreement is an important platform that we should use to discuss key issues - including the current situation in Gaza.“
