Business Insider: US Navy carried out the largest airstrike from an aircraft carrier in history

This happened on February 1 in the Red Sea against Islamic State positions in Somalia

US Navy fighter jets carried out the largest airstrike from a deck in history on February 1. This was reported by the information portal Business Insider with reference to the acting chief of naval operations of the US Navy James Kilby.

According to the online publication, the target of the strike was terrorist groups in Somalia. In total, over 56 thousand kg of ammunition were dropped on Islamist positions. The operation, conducted by the aircraft carrier "Harry Truman", which was in the Red Sea at the time, involved 16 F/A-18 Super Hornet fighters.

The strike group, which included the aircraft carrier and several other warships, deployed last fall and spent several months in the Middle East, where it served as a base for US military operations against Houthi rebels in Yemen.

In February, US Africa Command said it had struck caves in Somalia where one of the leaders of the "Islamic State" was hiding.

The White House said on Wednesday that the United States had killed more than 100 militants in Somalia since President Donald Trump took office on January 20.
