The identity of the little girl whose body was found on a beach in the Athens area of Palio Faliro remains unknown, Greek media reported, BTA reported.
The body was found late Saturday night by a 33-year-old Egyptian citizen. No one has looked for the girl for four days.
According to a report by state television ERT, also quoted in other media, her age is estimated at around 4 years, not 3, as forensic doctors initially thought. However, the child is of short stature, which suggests that she was probably malnourished.
A key to establishing her origin may be the clothing she was wearing – a long-sleeved one-piece swimsuit in turquoise, which according to reports is not available in stores in Greece.
According to forensic experts, the body had been in the sea for between 24 and 48 hours.
As Giorgos Kaliakmanis, honorary president of the police in Southeast Attica, told ERT, among the leading scenarios being investigated is that the child was with a companion who also drowned. Divers have been sent to verify this hypothesis.
However, criminal activity is not ruled out, i.e. The child was forcibly drowned, but there is no evidence to support this scenario.
Sky TV reported that authorities are also investigating the possibility that the child was traveling on a migrant boat that sank, or that he escaped from a juvenile detention center.
Another Greek television station, ANT1, reported that authorities had inspected the migrant detention center in Malakasa, Attica, following reports that the child of a migrant family had gone missing and bore a resemblance to the body found.
None of these hypotheses have been confirmed so far.
More light is expected to be shed by toxicological analyses of the child's body, which will be ready in the coming weeks.
