After the unthinkable 8.8 on the Richter scale, a new strong earthquake hit Kamchatka

Residents of the regional capital of Kamchatka have felt new tremors, the Kamchatka branch of the Geophysical Service of the Russian Academy of Sciences reported to TASS.

“The magnitude of the seismic event is 6.3, the epicenter is 178 km from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. The instrumental intensity is up to three points“, the institution reported.

On the morning of July 30, a powerful earthquake occurred off the coast of Kamchatka. It is the strongest since 1952. According to the authorities, its magnitude reached 8.8.

A high alert regime has been introduced in Kamchatka. A strong earthquake was also felt in Severo-Kurilsk this morning, followed by tsunami waves up to 200 meters wide. 2,400 people live in the area and were evacuated to safe places, provided with tea and hot food.

The earthquake also triggered a tsunami in the Pacific Ocean, with authorities in Japan, the United States and the Philippines issuing warnings.
