US President Donald Trump today demanded that billionaire philanthropist George Doros, who has become a target of ultraconservatives and conspiracists, and his son be tried for alleged support for protests in the country that turned into riots, Agence France-Presse reported, BTA reported.
They "should be tried under the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act (RICO) for their support for violent protests in the United States," he wrote on his social network "Truth Social".
Ninety-five-year-old George Soros and "his group of psychopaths have caused enormous damage to our country!", Trump added, without giving further details.
Hated by ultra-conservatives and a regular target of anti-Semitic attacks, the Hungarian-born billionaire has been accused by his critics of funding protests that turned into riots, working to overthrow the US government and creating a migration crisis in Europe.
During the protests in Los Angeles against Trump's repressive anti-immigration policies in June, conservative social media users claimed that the demonstrations were supported by NGOs linked to George Soros.
AFP journalists later reported that photos circulating online showing piles of bricks being thrown at police were actually taken elsewhere.
One of George Soros' sons – Alexander, who took over the leadership of the organization, said he wanted to be more involved in the United States than his father, supporting programs to encourage Latino and African-American voters to vote and calling on Democratic politicians to communicate more effectively.
In January, former US President Joe Biden awarded George Soros the prestigious "Presidential Order of Freedom", AFP recalls.
