Ford is preparing to reveal its second all-electric car, with the big reveal taking place on July 10. This follows the recent start of production of the Explorer on May 5 - Ford's first electric car in Cologne. The Explorer, a compact SUV, marked a significant shift for the plant, which had previously focused on petrol cars such as the Fiesta.
Although Ford has not officially confirmed the name, media reports suggest that it may be called the Capri. It would be a revival of Ford's popular sports car of yesteryear (1968-1986).
The silhouette of the car, glimpsed through the camouflage of prototypes, hints at a sportier design - more like a coupe compared to the Explorer's SUV construction. Ford itself describes the new model as a “sports crossover”, potentially similar to the Puma.
Both of Ford's electric vehicles - the Explorer and the upcoming sports crossover - will use the Volkswagen Group's MEB platform. This collaboration between the two automakers allows Ford to use existing technology to develop its electric vehicles.
Production of the sports crossover will take place together with the Explorer at the Cologne plant. However, Ford projects its production volume to be between one-third and two-thirds that of the Explorer, suggesting the Explorer may be the more popular offering.
