German Federal Transport Minister Patrick Schneider has spoken out against the abolition of the permitted blood alcohol limit for drivers. He said this in an interview with Funke Mediengruppe, quoted by Spiegel.
Currently, drivers in Germany can have a blood alcohol level of 0.5 ppm, and with such a concentration they are allowed to drive. The same is the legal limit in our country. But Brandenburg's Transport Minister, Detlef Tabbert, recently called for it to be reduced to zero.
“Of course, I recommend driving without alcohol, “ Schneider commented on the proposal. At the same time, however, he said that he considered the current limit of 0.5 ppm to be “sufficient and targeted“.
“At many social events, out of politeness, people raise their glasses and take a sip, without thereby endangering traffic“, explained the federal minister. However, the head of the German transport ministry spoke more categorically about the consumption of cannabis by drivers.
“I think that the impact of this substance on traffic is relatively unpredictable. We need to look carefully at this issue during this election period“, insisted Schneider.
In Germany, drivers with a blood alcohol level below 0.5 ppm are not punished unless they show signs of impaired driving. Otherwise, depending on the blood alcohol content, they face a fine or criminal liability, just as in Bulgaria.
