Swedish EU Affairs Minister Jessica Rosenkrantz believes that the new long-term EU budget proposed by the European Commission needs to be cut.
“The budget is too big, it needs to be cut“, she said, as quoted by Swedish broadcaster SVT. She is pleased that the budget prioritizes security and competitiveness, but calls for spending cuts in other areas.
“Two-thirds of the current EU budget goes to agricultural policy and various types of regional aid.“ “It is quite natural to consider the issue of redistribution of priorities“, she explained.
Earlier, the European Commission proposed to increase the next seven-year EU budget for 2028-2034 by EUR 800 billion, bringing its total volume to EUR 2 trillion compared to EUR 1.2 trillion in 2021-2027.
At the same time, the European Commission proposed to allocate additional funding to EU countries bordering Russia, Belarus and Ukraine, citing increased security risks. Negotiations to approve the new multiannual EU budget will start in September this year and should be completed by September 2027., after which the annual budgets of the European Union will be formed within the framework of the provisions of this plan.
