NSI: The settlements in Bulgaria without a single inhabitant were 201 in 2023,  - 1

As of December 31, 2023, the settlements in Bulgaria without no residents are 201, with the largest number of them located in the regions of Veliko Tarnovo (67), Gabrovo (67), Kyustendil (10) and Kardzhali (9), the National Statistical Institute (NSI) reported. In 1453 villages, or in 27.6 percent of the settlements, live from 1 to 49 people inclusive. There are over 100,000 people in six cities in the country, where 35.2 percent of the population lives, BTA calculated.

A reference in the NSI indicates that as of December 31, 2022, there were 205 settlements without a single inhabitant, with the largest number being in the regions of Veliko Tarnovo (69) and Gabrovo (68), followed by Kardzhali (9 ), Smolyan (9) and Kyustendil (9). In 1249 villages, or in 23.8 percent of the settlements in 2022, 1 to 49 people lived inclusively. There were also six cities in the country with a population of over 100,000 people, where 35 percent of the people in our country lived.

As in 2022, last year the municipality with the largest population in Bulgaria was Stolichna. Apart from it, 7 more municipalities in the country have a population of over 100,000 people - Plovdiv, Varna, Burgas, Stara Zagora, Ruse, Sliven and Pleven. The relative share of the population in these 8 municipalities represents 40.8 percent of the entire population in the country.

And in 2023, the population of the Metropolitan Municipality is unevenly distributed in its individual districts, according to a report in the NSI. In two of them - "Lyulin" and "Mladost", 15.7 percent of the inhabitants of the Capital Municipality live, and each of the mentioned areas has more than 100,000 people. The smallest district in the Capital Municipality continues to be "Bankya" with a population of 11,531 people, or 0.9 percent of the municipality's population.
