Prof. Petar Stojanovic: Cyclists on the "Patriarch" are like virgins on a Brazilian beach - 1

„I don't live far from NDK. By the time I got to the studio there was great joy, because the approach to the center of Sofia is free. There are neither cyclists, nor public transport, nor cars,” commented historian Prof. Petar Stojanovic to BTV.

„Let me tell them something personally, because I guess their mothers got pregnant a long time ago from the joy of the surrounding population. The other day I sat at the Monument to Patriarch Euthymius, where their bike lane starts. I wasted about three hours until the first wretch on a bike passed who was confused because there was so much space and didn't know what to do. Frequency of bicycle transport on “Patriarch Euthymius“ Blvd. has the same chance as finding a virgin on a Brazilian beach. This is one to 500 thousand per square meter. I am not a supporter of thoughtless and stupidly done things. I am a supporter of everything European, new and modern, but don't copy things, he pointed out.

„I think they can take the Central Sofia Cemetery on a concession. If they bury the bodies straight, there will be an awful lot of space to make bicycle lanes so that people can reach their mourners even more comfortably, added Prof. Stojanovic.

„Today, May 11, the religious holiday Bright Saturday is celebrated. St. co-apostles Methodius and Cyril, and May 24 is the Day of the Bulgarian language, literature and its creators. One is the religious and the other is the secular holiday. They are in a natural symbiosis. During the years of communism, May 24 was the only holiday allowed. Then the church was under a strong ban. Then and today, May 24 remains the brightest star worth celebrating”, the historian pointed out.

„ Cyril and Methodius are also ours, but above all their heritage is ours – their students and the creation of the Cyrillic alphabet. St. Cyril died in Rome. St. Methodius died in Central Europe. They did not take the Bulgarian people by the hand in the physical sense, but they gave it a spiritual meaning to develop and exist through the students and the Cyrillic alphabet, which is named after who knows who“, Prof. Petar Stoyanovich also said.

„We always look at what can unite us, but we do not understand why it is important to separate and argue why some are like this and others are like that. It is enough for us to hate“.

“The right to “property“ and the “trademark“ for Cyril and Methodius, we want to keep it in our treasury, which is to a large extent correct, but it cannot be done, because Cyril and Methodius transcend national borders, countries and churches. They are a European unique. From the legacy of the Eastern Roman Empire to Central Europe – all this is tied to the work of Cyril and Methodius. We habitually always look at St. St. Cyril and Methodius from our bell tower. Their intellectual project is much more than creating an alphabet. They are first-rate diplomats – cultural, political, ecclesiastical. Their missions before Bulgaria and in today's Iraq, in Crimea, in Central Europe and Great Moravia – these are the border regions of Byzantium“.

„They are sent there by the most fundamental high cleric, Patriarch Photius, to do a certain job. They are something like the high commissioner of the civilized world in the frontier regions. They are sent there and they have done the work there in a way not only to satisfy the interests of their country, but they have received recognition for it from the biggest opponent – Rome. St. Constantine Cyril managed to impose a fourth liturgical language. The wealth inherited from the life mission of Cyril and Methodius far exceeds the slogans of May 2”.
