Statistics of the Bulgarian National Bank warn of the widespread distribution of counterfeit coins. The number of counterfeit money has increased dramatically, and at the same time it is very difficult for the ordinary Bulgarian to notice irregularities in the money he is operating with.

According to BNB data for the first quarter of last year, only two counterfeit 100 BGN banknotes were detected. For comparison, for the same period this year, these fake banknotes have increased to as many as 50. There is a decrease in the number of detected counterfeit 500, this year they are 83 against 200 in the first three months of last year. There are various schemes for how counterfeit money is introduced into the market.
General culture is not always enough to recognize counterfeit money. It requires quite in-depth knowledge about the structure of the banknote, its type, its thickness and its size. The most common method is the hologram, which with real banknotes should move when we look at it from a different angle. It looks like a picture on the fake ones.
Those who market counterfeit notes are very inventive. Valeri Chavdarov from Kyustendil became a victim of fraud a few years ago. Then he sells watermelons and melons in the capital. He sleeps in his car at night to keep them safe. According to him, they tried to defraud him twice, once unsuccessfully.
